CNC Machining: Benefits Of Multi-Axis Machining
Multi-Axis Machining
The CNC (Computer Numerical Control) process is extremely accurate and completely repeatable and is an excellent way of making very accurate parts from solid material.
Multi-Axis machining is an extremely versatile manufacturing process that carves a solid piece of material into the predetermined 3D geometrical shape and size using a process called subtractive machining. The material removal process is highly accurate and controlled using CNC technology.
CNC Machining is one of the most commonly used manufacturing processes for precision parts and components due to its high accuracy, efficiency and repeatability. There is an initial manual process to get the machine programmed and ensure the right tools are in place, once this is done the process is automated until you are left with a finished product.
3-Axis CNC Machining
The 3 Axis machine operates by keeping the material fixed while the cutters move.
At a minimum, there are 3 axis's, X & Y for movement left/right, front/back and then Z for up/down. In this machine, you can make block type parts in 3 directions or on one surface. The machine can also be fitted with different cutters depending on the size of the part and features to be machined into the material.
By using the 3 axis machining system, mechanical components can be effectively and efficiently manufactured.
5-Axis CNC Machining
The capabilities of 5 Axis machining is more diverse than 3 Axis machining.
The 5 Axis machine can machine parts on 5 surfaces simultaneously. In addition to automatic movements along the X, Y, and Z axes, 5 axis CNC machines can select two of the three rotational axes (A, B, C) to use. The A, B, and C axes perform a 180° rotation around the X, Y, and Z axes.
The 5 Axis machining is beneficial when components require a great deal of complexity and quick precision. When using 5 Axis Machining, complex shapes with intricate details and higher quality finishes can be produced.
CNC Machining can be part of a finishing process for making parts, for example, forged parts may be secondarily CNC machined to add finer details with high accuracy and tolerances.
Benefits of 5-Axis CNC Machining
Complex Components
The most significant benefit of 5-axis machining is the ability to machine complex shapes and parts from solid. The additional movement of a 5-Axis machine creates machining angles and arcs that were only previously possible with a multitude of special fixtures or additional setups.
Automatic Tool Changes
Most CNC machines are integrated with an automatic tool changer, allowing the machine to complete multiple operations using various tools and one machine.
Automated Process
After the machine receives the initial instructions for milling inputted into the computer by the operator, the machine completes the set tasks automatically.
High Repeatability
Once the instructions have been inputted, the machine is capable of creating multiple copies of one product, and to the exact dimensions and customer specifications.
